Frustrating start to the season going 1-2 on opening night. Eastern Michigan was an easy cover, but brutal 2nd halves wiped out solid starts from Coastal Carolina and Fresno State. On we go…

Nebraska-Omaha (+6): Going to take a shot with warp speed Nebraska-Omaha here as a road dog to open the season. For 4 straight years now Nebraska-Omaha has been in the top 5 in the nation in adjusted tempo. This is a team that’s looking to run as soon as they get off the bus. Run, run, run at any possible chance. It’s a fun style, the kids love to play it and last year they actually put up 18 wins. Yes they lost a lot from that squad but Derrin Hansen is inspiring some confidence with this team. They play loose, they play fun, and with a ton of energy. Their opponent UCSB has had Bob Williams running the show for years and he’s more of a slow it down guy. The Gauchos look to play half court basketball and grind out every possession. In this one Nebraska-Omaha is going to try to bait UCSB into getting into a track meet. They’d love nothing more than for the Gauchos to try and run with them. Obviously the game plan for Williams will be to try and slow down the Omaha pace, the true challenge is keeping his kids disciplined enough to avoid the temptation of running. Frankly the pace Omaha plays is just more fun and kids enjoy it more, to not take the bait for a full 40 minutes is tough. Despite UCSB’s best efforts I still see this game flirting with 80 possessions which favors Omaha. In such a game I’ll take my chances with them plus the 6.
